Should not exist. enforce the yardage only and if that results in a first down so be it.
An automatic first down penalty on 3rd and long is essentially like the refs handing a free turnover to the other team, in terms of impact.

Yea, automatic 1st is dumb.
Think of this scenario
3rd and 10, offense throws a 12 yard pass but there is holding.
So now 3rd and 20, offense runs a pass play and there is defensive holding...
Now it's 1st and 10. Makes no sense
