Finally saw it tonight and just read the entire thread. I have to agree while the movie was fantastic and JP did a masterful job it didn't feel like he is Joker. Felt more like I was simply watching a movie about a mentally ill person. I get that it was at his beginning but there's no way that character could match wits with Batman. Also...
That was maybe the most terrified I felt watching the movie I didn't get funny at all. The little person's disability having a direct impact on if he may live or die was haunting.

Him scaring the midget after stabbing that dude and then him not being able to reach the lock was pretty funny.

i finally watched it and thought it was great.
i think his genius/brilliance was probably there all along.
just buried down deep. his introvert personality and overall lack of confidence are impediments to his intelligence.
and as his crazy finally bubbles over, it “unlocks” something else in his brain that also causes his IQ to skyrocket because there is no longer anything holding him back.
and now with no barriers, he is absolutely batshit crazy on top of other worldly brilliant.
a truly dangerous combo.

Joaquin's Joker can barely tie his own shoes or fill a pill dispenser, but you expect me to believe this is guy will one day:
-outwit Batman,
-successfully pull off a major bank heist,
-defeat a mob boss and take his gang,
-kill the police commissioner & a judge,
-attack a police convoy with military armament,
-take hostages to separate locations and rig explosives
-kill an international mob boss & his henchmen, then burn their money
-blow up a whole hospital
-take a busload of hostages
-rig two ferries with explosives
i think his genius/brilliance was probably there all along.

While watching it I thought he killed her as well bc of the sirens
i really didn’t think he killed her.
they showed all of his murders and then heavily implied the one in the clinic at the end with bloody footprints.
but left her outcome open ended.

Bump because I finally watched it yesterday and didn't want to create another Joker thread.
I loved this rendition on the Joker and I thought JP knocked it out of the park. I have heard rumors the director talked JP into doing another one and they absolutely have to include Bruce Wayne. They set it up perfectly:
- they have met and Bruce will surely remember their encounter.
- Joker is partly responsible for his parents death
- a young batman could work against him set in the 90's maybe?
I fully understand people wanting it to be a one off movie but I feel like this movie barely scratched the surface on how insane/murderous he was getting at the end. I believe by next movie he is completely different bc he changed drastically after killing his mother. Now he has a motivation as to why he would be against the elite such as Bruce Wayne.
Fantastic movie!
