What is the general consensus for pre emergent to put down right now on Bermuda and St. Augustine mix to mitigate the Poa Annua that I have to fight with in the winter and early spring? I know it dies off in the heat, but man that stuff is a pain and I'd like to take care of it early.

Also with whatever we put down, how close can we get it to the flower beds and drip edges of trees without causing problems? I don't want to cause more issues than i already have.

I use Treflan as a pre-emergent. I use it in my lawn and flowerbeds with a lot of success. I have a Zoysia lawn and have had no problems.

a pre-emergent shouldn't have much impact on existing plants. It might prevent your grass from spreading/healing but that would be it.

I personally use granular Dimension (dithiopyr) pre-emergent in the fall and spring. Poa used to be my number 1 problem winter weed - no longer - I’ve eliminated about 90-95% of it using Dimension. Now is the time to apply it.

I’ve virtually eliminated crabgrass with a late winter (mid-Feb) application of Dimension. Now on the other hand, doveweed has become my number 1 summer weed and Dimension does not appear to be very effective against it. I’ll try Barricade pre-emergent to target doveweed next year.

Pre-emergent herbicides such as Dimension or Barricade will have no negative effects applied within the drip edges of trees or flower beds - in fact will provide some benefit - unless you plan some plant some flower seeds or any other plant from seed. One caveat - Atrazine herbicide has both pre-emergent and post-emergent properties - avoid using that herbicide within the drip-line of trees or flower beds as it can potentially harm woody trees and shrubs.

With the Dimension, do you use the concentrate or the granular? Thanks to my neighbor planting winter rye last year, i now have a huge Poa Annua problem.

I use granular simply b/c it’s more convenient to apply in my residential yard but of course use whatever form you find most convenient for you.
