You climb the first time with your harness strap wrapped around the tree moving it up as you go. Once you have either placed your loc-on stand or ladder stand, you attached a life line higher than the platform you sit on. You can then use a prusik knot on that lifeline to ascend and descend with relative ease.
It’s a lot easier than moving a strap each time and several manufacturers make them if you don’t want to make your own.

Right. We use these on every lock on. It's just so easy and super safe. I feel much better climbing with it and muddy boots.
