With him having the PO for next season perhaps they would take the expirings and send us GH with pick(s) so they can have flexibility the following season. I think he is going to have a bounce back season fwiw.
Can the DPE be used on a guy with a player option for a second year?
Also, can the DPE be combined with the player the DPE was issued for?

From RealGM:
So, Gordon Hayward is out. Time to move on. Only guys in the true final year of their contract are possible. I'm still trying to determine how the DPE can be combined with other guys. I'm thinking there are major restrictions on combining it with salary, but I'm not sure.
The only thing I've found so far indicates that a players salary must fit into the DPE + $100,000, which seems to indicate that it cannot be combined with existing players to bring in a more expensive player. That seriously reduces the number of trade and buyout options.

They can use that exception to trade for a single player in the last year of his contract (no options!), sign a single free agent on a one year deal, or claim a qualifying player off waivers.
