The land you can see from Hwy 90 in Raceland was most recently owned by Prudential Life Insurance- not 100%, but they may have divested that to MA Patout & Sons who own the Raceland mill.

For the most part, all the cane land in LA is owned by old families and rented out to sugarcane farmers for a percentage of the crop. The mill gets a percent, the landowner gets a percent, and the farmer keeps the rest.

Over the last few years, some farmers have been able to buy some land for themselves, but it is a VERY small percentage of their total acreage- like 100-500 acres out of 4000 acres total farmed.

My family owns a large portion. My great grandpa bought as much as he could back in the day. Whoever farms it just sends in a check of whatever every now and then. I don't think it's very much though.
