Pocket knives under certain size were allowed. That may have stopped before but not much before. Walking to the gate to meet my wife at gate sounds strange now.

watch a John Wayne movie called the High and the Mighty (1954).

A man wants to kill the guy who's banging his wife, so he tries to get on a plane the guy is on, with a gun. He's found out, his gun is taken, and he throws a fit.

Eventually he calms down, boards the plane... And the stewardess gives him his gun back.

I remember as a kid carrying my Boy Scout pocket knife on the plane. Security guy pulled it out of my backpack and opened up the blade. Held it up to his palm and said “shorter than my palm, you are OK” and put it back in my backpack. Only thing they ever took from me was a bunch of bottle rockets I was trying to fly back from OK with.
