A few thoughts on Orgeron vs Herman from surlyhorns

Orgeron Out-Coached Herman
quote:
Let’s shut up about how much of an idiot he is. His staff just obliterated ours.
quote:
ed did what Herman needs to do... hire someone to address the weakness.
quote:
I'm not on the fire Orlando train, but he got his arse handed to him tonight.
quote:
Herman took three points off the board for us and gifted LSU with 7 at the end of the first half. (I am not counting the Ingram drop -- only the second FG Herman turned his nose up at, and then running no clock on that shitty drive and giving it back to Burrow and co. with way too much time.)
quote:
I've never thought Ed Orgeron was an idiot. Everywhere the guy goes his unit is top notch and his recruiting is elite. We'll see how it pans out being the head coach at a major program the second time around but it looks pretty fricking good right now. The internet can make a cartoon out of anyone. Buying into that shallow nonsense is idiotic. What was at stake tonight was a defining foundation for two programs. Orgeron took it.
quote:
Exactly this. Orgeron watched a unit beyond his expertise in his program become a slight risk and he addressed it ruthlessly. Herman watched the same thing with Orlando last year and bro'd himself around it and here they are.

That's pretty funny stuff. The truth though is that the vast majority of people on here did not think the game would be that close and never imagined us giving up 38 points and over 500 yards of offense with all the talent we have. It was a great game to watch with two talented teams going at it. Herman did a great job in preparing his offense. He decided to be aggressive at home and it came back to bite him a few times, but they also had the perfect play call on one of the calls and the player just flat-out didn't execute a wide-open pass that would have been a TD.
And Ed O should get a ton of credit for bringing in Joe Brady because that likely would have been an L if we had not brought him in this year.

I said last night that Herman called an excellent game offensively. He knew exactly what Aranda would try to do, either from familiarity or otherwise, and had players in position to win. As an OC he gets an A+.
But he lost the matchup as a head coach. Leaving points on the board in two trips inside the 10 was a back breaker. He RAN onto the field to call timeouts before the half and then took nothing off the clock, underestimating LSU's ability to make him pay for it. He toes the line between aggressive and arrogant. Ed took the points and made the right decisions at almost every juncture.

Very well said. Herman called a great offensive game but failed in his decisions as a head coach. I felt like, with his statements during the week, he never thought they had a chance in this game and tried to get every point he could and it ended up backfiring on him.

I read a couple of the threads there. Pissed that I’ll never get those 6 minutes of my life back.
Lots of belly aching about faking cramps. I’m sure some weren’t legit but it appeared that most were. There is never any mention about TOP and plays ran. Spoiler alert Texas lead in those categories.
It’s a different game if CEH catches and converts the first drive in the second half.

I don't think anything they're saying is all that different from what we've been saying needs to happen.
Offense is beyond his scope. We said it was imperative that he hires someone that knows how to run a modern offense and let him do his job unfettered. He even admits last night that his instinct was to order the offense to go conservative in the late moments of the game but he was told to stay aggressive.
He's finally listening to his lieutenants when they have a better vantage point and he deserves full credit for that. That's part of being a good leader.

People can be so silly if Miles was still here LSU would have won SEC last year and this year texas would have scored 17 points to LSUs 37 ,with SEC being down last year Coach O and MIles would have recruited even better last year and this year ! I cant prove this and yall cant prove the trash yall talk about Miles and O either !

VERY insightful.
I’ll admit that even as an LSU fan, i’ve been guilty in the past of buying into the narrative of Coach O being a little over his head, or not on par with some other bright minds in coaching.. i’m starting to think i was wrong, and very happy to be wrong in this case.

The same miles that managed 7 points on coastal Carolina lol

Yeah, that was the only decision I can fault him on. Thankfully, Ed O and LSU made him pay.
I don't fault him for going for it inside the 10 because he felt they couldn't stop LSU on offense and he was right. He had the perfect play call for a TD on the one call and his player just didn't execute. Sometimes that happens.

I mean, had queen got a hand on the last TD throw, we would have won by 2 touchdowns. The game wasn’t really as close as everyone is making it out to be

I'm trying to make sense of this. I think you're trying to say hypotheticals are just that. And ultimately, that is true.

Many USC fans and people in the athletic department wanted to promote O to head coach. They got overruled by suits. He can coach.

It was 37-31 and we had a 3rd and 17 with 2:38 left in the game. It was a close game.

WTF? Did you watch the 2nd half at all?

I know what you mean here. I never thought we were losing at any point in the 2nd half, despite the scoreboard.

This. I absolutely feel that if they had converted here and scored the game would have gone much differently

The game ends with a completely different feel if we don’t give up a late touchdown. It would’ve been a nail in the coffin moment with the Jefferson TD rather than feeling like we had to hang on. I don’t think you’d see near the negativity about certain things. It’s amazing how fine the line is where perceptions are concerned.
