Looking to buy generic for the house. House is 1,900:square feet. We have two fridges, central AC unit, we would like to have enough power to keep all lights going along with the other appliances. What size generator should I purchase. We have a guy coming out, I don’t want to get talked into something we don’t need but do want enough power to keep things working. Big purchase so am looking for knowledgeable responses , thanks all.

Try this calculator from Cummins and pick/choose what's important to you.

Gas vs electric appliances will make a decent difference too

We have gas in subdivision, is that better way to go or should I do my own propane?

Gas would be better, because you already have it.

We could play what ifs all day. I think if its bad enough that it takes out tje gas lines, you should probably just pack up and head out.

I can't think of a scenario where you'd be thankful you went propane over natural with both available.
Like the last guy said, if you're out of natural gas, how much propane you have on site is the least of your worries.

Ok, thanks all . I also thought natural gas was best. We lose electric when somebody coughs.

10kW nat gas, and get a soft start for your A/C compressor

I run everything in my 1200sqft house except the central A/C off of a portable 5500 on nat gas. That's including two full-sized refrigerators (one new and one 20 years old) and two window units. I can run the microwave, all TVs, and lights with no problem

Most of the time, people don't need as much as they buy

This is what I remember from researching it a few years ago, so don't quote me:

Your A/C needs a certain amount of amperage to start, and a lesser amount to run. A soft start basically steps up the motor voltage in stages to get it running, where it normally just jumps up to the full starting voltage all at once, which also means the full amperage, and it'll kill your generator.

For example, my compressor'starting amperage is something like 160, and running is 30. I can start up 30A of random equipment at once on my generators, but not 160A. The engine can't handle that much load, and it dies.

I think the whole setup was supposed to be like $600 if I bought and installed everything.

I dont think a 10kw generator is going to do it. All the calculators for an all electric house are spitting out a 20kw.

Ill check with a couple people on monday though and see what they think.

I have a micro air easy start on my camper, so I can run the A/C on a 2k inverter. They do make one for home use.

great example, the rule of thumb for across the line starters is starting current = about 6 times running current but can be up to 10. With a soft start you can get to under 3.

Do not install anything smaller than a 20kW. Your not saving that much money with a smaller unit. Cummins QuietConnect 20kW with 200 Amp Auto Transfer Switch (ATS) is a solid choice. Natural Gas is best fuel source.

Don't get a Generac. They have more quality issues compared to Cummings or Kohler.
