re: Remeber 2013 when we probably would have drafted Trey Burke 6th if we kept the pick?

Can someone explain this draft?

The Erie Bayhawks of last year are moving to Atlanta to become the College Park Skyhawks. The Pels are starting a brand new expansion team this season but Birmingham wasn't ready so they made an agreement with the Erie Bayhawks business team to play there until Birmingham is ready.

Since this is a new expansion team they had no players. The GLeague held an expansion draft where every team had to make 2 players available to possibly be drafted by the Bayhawks. The result of that expansion draft is what this thread is about.

I thought the G-League was sort of like the NFL UDFA process

It sort of is:

1) The Pels NBA team only has rights to players on it's roster that it sends down, like the rookies, or players on 2 way contracts, like Zylan Cheetham. If another team were willing to offer a player like Aubrey Dawkins or KBW a 2 way contract or an actual roster contract, there isn't anything the Pels could do about it. You would hope you've built up enough good will to be allowed to match if you had the roster spots or 2 way contracts available, but the rights to Erie Bayhawk players aren't really owned by the Pels.

2) There is also an annual GLeague draft after all of the NBA camp cuts. It's basically all of the cuts and undrafted players that didn't make an NBA team. These players belong to the GLeague team that drafted them, not their NBA parent, so any NBA team could sign them.
