Where do you draw the line between artificial sweeteners and calories?

Some research says that the health affects of artificial sweeteners can outweigh the calories that sugar would've provided. Apparently some sweeteners trick your body unto thinking it's sugar and creates fat? (can someone confirm?)
Where do you/should you draw the line? Is a sweetener in your coffee really that bad? What about all those protein bars with "sugar alcohols"?
Obviously the goal is to cut out all artificial sweeteners and sugar. But for those of us who struggle with that...

Most of the artificial sweetener hysteria is just bullshite. The studies that find anything are either severely flawed or they are dosing rats with massive, massive quantities of artificial sweeteners in a single dose. Fact is there is no evidence that moderate consumption of them has any consequential effect aside from some of them causing diarrhea if you eat too much (sorbitol in particular).
They said, just because it's not proven now doesn't mean there if absolutely nothing negative.. as with all things, moderation.

Layne Norton just talked about this. He says that’s crap. And I agree. Fat is created by eating a surplus of food. Are some foods better than others? There’s no debate, but fat is caused by a surplus.
Obviously the less artificial and processed junk we eat, the better off we’ll be. Does that mean the one packet of sweetener you put in your coffee will kill you? Probably not. If you eat a lot of it regularly, I would guess that could lead to some health issues.

Its not that they cause fat. The thinking is that artificial sweeteners cause an insulin response like sugar does. But I don't think that has ever been proven.

No they are not bad, read the actual science and the studies not some article written by a jackass selling something.

Why? Sounds stupid. Not trying to be a monk.
