The “someone has to be gay” rule hits another show: (Spoilers?)

Mindhunter.
I find it annoying.
This is one of my favorite shows of the last few years and a shoehorned lesbian subplot is completely unnecessary.

We fast forwarded through all of those scenes. Did nothing for the show.

She was a lesbian from the start of last season. It’s nothing new.

What? She was a lesbian last season. Her partner being upset with her for choosing the FBI over academia was her major plot point.
And there are lesbians in the world. We spend time on Ford's and Tench's relationship, why not Carr's?

How do you know if any scenes do nothing for a show if you fast forward through them?
ETA: did you fast forward thru the scenes with Holden and his gf? Didn’t really add much of anything to the main storyline

As soon as they shoehorned her as a lesbian, they set her up as Mary Sue with a prison interview.
Did she even enter a prison in season 1?

I don't find it shoehorned at all.
Holden's relationship from the first season felt much more unnecessary and time-consuming.

There is also a "someone has to be black" rule -- an NBC memo saying this was made public a few years ago

By definition a Mary Sue is:
“Mary Sue is a term used to describe a fictional character, usually female, who is seen as too perfect and almost boring for lack of flaws, originally written as an idealized version of an author in fanfiction.”
What about Dr. Carr is boring, too perfect, or unflawed?

Weird that you didn’t seem to have a problem with the same type of relationship arc with Holden in season 1.
I think you’re projecting here

That one interview was her only success for the season. She was a marginal friend and her importance at work was minimized. She was invisible during the climactic final episode. Your complaint of their wasting time on the trio’s personal relationships is valid. Singling out the lesbian is lame.

I do agree that relationship has little bearing on the overall story.

Didnt feel like it was a Mary Sue. Shes been a supporting character for a lot of the time and shes more organic to the story than any Mary Sue.

Agents of shield and the gay black scientist they shoved in was terrible.
Also the gay in the support group for Avengers End game was stupid also.

the total of LGBQ in the US population is around 4%, a number so low that the concept should almost never be addressed, yet when asked US survey responders think its from 10-25% because of television and movie exposure.

The show spends a significant amount of time showing a very monstrous and small segment of homosexuality by linking it to the cause of a lot these killers motive. Maybe a gay character that isn’t a monster is important to keeping the show balanced.

She’s been a closeted lesbian all along. Where have you been? The actor who plays Ford is gay, but they didn’t feel the need to make his character gay.
I agree though that some series and movies feel the need to shoehorn in the minority character, whether they be gay, black, or whatever, just for the sake of diversity. One of the reasons why I stopped watching This is Us was that I got tired of Randall calling his mother a racist and going on and on about how he couldn’t relate to his siblings because he was black. I turned that shite off with a quickness. I enjoy Mindhunter, but if the show suddenly starts making Carr’s sexuality a central plot point for a reason other than to enhance the story, I’ll probably quit watching too.
