Taking the family to Dauphin Island mid October. I have two 10 ft two person kayaks and plenty of saltwater tackle. Can anyone give recommendations on where / how to fish there? Species doesn’t matter. I’d just like my wife and daughter to catch. Any tips would be much appreciated. TIA.

According to this board there's no fish to be caught in Alabama salt water in and around the Bay. Just a heads up

There a cove around the marina on the eastern side where a lot of people fish, cork and shrimp for reds/specks. When we were there, me and the kids caught sharks for fun in the surf, just wading out. Had to get steel leaders, though, but a fast and steady bite on shrimp and squid....3-4 pound black tips were everywhere....

On the east gulf side, down from the golf course. It’s protected and lots of fish in there.

Have only been to the island a few times and never fished there, but almost every time I went, I saw a dolphin cruising the bank there by the old fort. Makes me think that there must be some fish there, but I don't know, I'm really not much of a fisherman.

I'd wish I had known that before I drove there to fish last weekend lol

Locals fish for junk off the pier past the ferry. I've never caught anything other than a shark over there. Bull reds in the dixie bar get mentioned every DI thread, but might be a bit of a challenge in a kayak.

Be sure to bring some board games for quality family time. Take pics!

I've lived on the Bay for 30+ years and have never caught a fish after hundreds of attempts.

Depends on what the water temp is at the time. The trout will be there, but theyll be heading inland. Taking your kayak and putting it in across the bridge in Heron Bay should yield nice fish at that time.

+1

Around that time is when the trout start moving up into the delta and are staging fowl river, dog river, and the industrial canal but it all depends on salinity and temperature. I also agree that the golf course is a good option if you have kids. Its very easy to do and if they get bored, you can always take them around the point and play on the beach. Another option is to take them night fishing under the lights around the neighbor hoods. some people frown on it because they do have people who steal from under the camps, but ive never had problems and the owners are always really nice if you show respect to their property.

That's funny, I was going to say the exact same thing. It's almost like we've fished together or something

I'd start them with shrimp and a poppin cork.
