They aren’t going full on retard like Rian Johnson et all.
They’re trying to bring some of their more recent storylines to the screen to goose sales on them and, in turn, boost readership for the comics IMHO.
Stuff like FalconCap and JaneThor is far more recent than a lot of the major stories which have gotten cribbed for the movies like Infinity Gauntlet, which dates back to the early 90s, or some other stories which date back to the 60s or 70s.
Do I think this is necessarily their smartest move? No, as their readership dropped when they did a number of these dumber recastings of iconic characters. But there is at least a thought process behind it.

Not really arguing the sentiment here, but many of these recastings and switchups happened because of flagging readership. Also, there are a some great JaneThor comics.

So, the OP is correct. If the viewership of the movies drops as much as the readership did when they SJWed the comics, it would wreck a studio.
There may be a thought process behind it; but it's a stupid thought process.
