Tell me about Shimano Curado DC Reels

I’ve got a friend that swears this is the single greatest fishing invention ever. Is it worth the $250 price tag for the digital control?

I don't even know what it does, but the very idea of electronics in a fishing reel makes me want to vomick. Yes, I'm too good/old fashioned for that.

I messed around with the SLX one at the sportsman show yesterday and that one has the same system as the Curado but for $189.
No experience other than yesterday. I do have a SLX reel and it’s a really good reel. If it’s skmething you really want to try but don’t want to quite spend the $250, that SLX is probably the way to go.

Supposedly the digital computer automatically adjusts the spool tension when it’s casts. Once it’s set it’s almost impossible to birdnest. He says you can cast it without ever putting your thumb on the spool to stop it when it hits the water. Makes it much easier to throw in wind.

Shimano guy told me yesterday that his 8yr old can throw into a dead on wind without putting a finger in the spool and not bird nest. TIFWIW

I picked one up from Bowie’s a few months ago to mess with. Love it. Great distance and can whip it full velocity into a stiff wind and that fricker won’t backlash.

Has Shimano made any statements about how they expect the DC controls to hold up with salt water use/exposure and repeated rinsing?

I'm sure people will love it. It's in the same category as crossbows and electronic lures for me.

Was gunna say... just wait for this one to come out later this month. The SLX was already a good reel... with the added DC, it will be great.

I haven't tried one but with the rise of deep cranking, and ledge fishing in general, they are gaining steam in the US. Have been big for about a decade in Japan where they are fascinated with throwing super light lures on baitcasters.
In general the selling point is it will allow you to be ultra efficient throwing oddly shaped lures long distances into the wind, which is very important when covering water and gauging the interest of a school of fish on deep water points and ledges.
For tournament guys in those scenarios casts per hour matter a lot, and can be the difference in making a check. For the rest of us it's probably a neat toy, and I haven't felt the need to rush out and buy one, but if I found myself throwing 6xds a bunch I probably would.

ETA: I'm generally pretty bad about backlashing with casting reels but a buddy turned me onto the Daiwa Tatula SVTW a while back and I can fish it all day with maybe only a handful of minor backlashes. The minute I cast with a different reel, I'm untangling a backlash on the first cast
Curious to try out the Shimano DC system although I'd wait a while to buy one to be able to see how the electronics in it hold up to saltwater and being rinsed off after every use

You can still backlash it, especially with thin braid or flouro, it's just not quite as easy and probably won't lead to having to cut anything.
The DC system is sealed so shouldn't be any more prone to corrosion than the parent reel it's built on, but Shimano can get cute with some of their materials like magnesium in their spools and have corrosion issues.

I love mine. It can still birdnest but no where near as severe. I've let my 8 year old daughter throw it and she can actually fish with it. It also makes this great humming sound when you cast that I can't get enough of. I've been using it on a SixGill Scythe throwing cranks. I have 15lb fluoro spooled and it throws a mile!

I bought 1 and put it on a kistler rod and that quickly became my favorite setup. I was throwing a little rattle trap straight into the wind with it one day and it wouldn’t backlash. No other reel I have would’ve been able to do that efficiently. I ended up buying 2 more DC’s and 2 more kistlers because I liked the one I had so much.

They just released the new SLX reel for 2019 with the DC technology that's about $70 lighter on the wallet.
