This is one of the core problems with modern WoW, IMO. 98% of the content in the game is irrelevant now. Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor might as well not even exist once you hit max level and it's been that way since at least WoD. I really hope Classic is a splash of cold water in the face of the Blizz execs.

That's kinda expected to happen though with numerous expansions being released. The major cities are still used. But as more and more expansions come out, bringing more worlds, areas and content, the old content should become irrelevant for the most part. I guess they could put more new content melded into the old world, but why would I at level 120 want to go back to Stranglethorn Vale?

Debatable. If you have the Auction House mount, there's really no reason to go to a major city that isn't BFA content. Silvermoon has been dead for years, they just scorched Teldrasil, Undercity is destroyed now. I think it makes sense in most MMOs to attract the players to new areas every expac, but when a game is as old and as expansive as WoW is, at some point you're just wasting assets. It's pretty clear they don't put much effort into the leveling experience anymore, so why not use that huge chunk of world? The plot for BFA was the perfect catalyst for something like this as we're literally draining the planet of its energy, but only within Kul'Tiras and Zandalar for some reason even though the initial wound is in Silithus. So instead of actually saving/killing the whole planet, we're stuck running around these two islands. Seems like a waste to me.
