Eff getting out to Bridgeview
Posted on 7/9/19 at 2:09 pm to Esquire
They’re gonna have probably two open DP spots next season with an expanded salary cap once the new CBA is negotiated in the offseason. It’ll be a great chance for the team to splash some cash and be relevant in Chicago for the first time.
The team’s best years came when they played at Soldier Field from 1998 to 2006. I’m optimistic the move back will launch a new era for the team under much better ownership.

I know this means that they get back to playing in Chicago proper, but should we really be celebrating an MLS team moving out of a soccer specific stadium to an NFL stadium where they home games are going to appear half-empty?

This is still a step forward for Chicago. They had a bad long-term contract to play in Bridgeview. Even though there will be a lot of empty seats, they should still draw a larger crowd in Soldier Field. Also frees them up to search for a better location for a SS stadium.

Yes. Playing in Bridgeview is that bad for the Fire. It would be like a New Orleans team playing in Slidell from an appeal and accessibility perspective. Bridgeview is an hour drive to a shitty location for most Chicago residents.
It would be a step backwards for almost every other MLS team in 2019, but Chicago is an exception. They need to go back to the city. There is a potential stadium site at an old hospital not too far from Wrigley Field, so if all goes well, the Fire will have their own soccer-specific stadium before too long.
The Fire’s new 49% owner (probably soon to be majority owner) is in the Bears’ ownership group, so they won’t have to pay much to use Soldier Field.

It would be hilarious if they beat NYCFC to the punch for a soccer specific stadium in Chicago. With Nashville SC being in MLS next year Chicago now moves up the list for away days I want to do. Atlanta and Cincy being the obvious other two.

It’s very possible. From the news I follow, NYCFC is very close to securing a stadium site at what is currently a parking garage about half a mile south of Yankee Stadium. They think construction could be done by 2024. Imagine a Bombonera type stadium in the Bronx.
They’re keeping any progress quiet until it’s 100% finalized. Back in 2013, they had a handshake deal for a stadium until the current mayor axed that plan, so they don’t want that to happen again. The novelty of playing in Yankee Stadium has worn off very quickly, and is now a hindrance to the team’s growth.
We’re gonna have new stadiums in Austin, Columbus, Miami, Nashville, Sacramento, and St. Louis within the next 3 years or so. Las Vegas is also moving quickly on building an indoor SSS. Possibly Phoenix, too. It’s an exciting time for stadium lovers.

That stadium in the awful "New Jersey" area of Chicago was atrocious- Soldier Field is legit

They should have built the stadium in Arlington Heights like they discussed when they went with Bridgeview. They would have gotten great fan support there. I made the drive over to Bridgeview a couple of times and it was a pain in the arse.

That's good because MLS should be embarrassed at the setup at Yankee Stadium. I flipped their game on on Sunday and that pitch just looks utterly ridiculous on TV

I love the atmosphere at the games when I’ve went
I just hate going to the Bronx

Atleast the MTA station is nearby so you don't have to stick around long.

I think Raleigh will get a bid before St Louis

we already got it. It'll be officially announced during the MLS all star break or second week of august(not sure the reason behind the august part).
Even taylor twellmann was on the radio last week and said it was a done deal.
