he woulda took just about whoever he could get, See kyrie for an example, over going to play w lebron. Lebron is a guy that is well liked around the league but his off court antics have made him a very unattractive running mate for the other high end players in the league.

But let’s be honest, Kawhi had the option of playing with one superstar on a deep team overall (and he’s only ever played on deep teams) or play with 2 superstars on a team with limited depth. And since load management was such an issue, he clearly chose the option that was probably better to manage his load in the regular season over the option with more upside potential in the postseason in the near term.
In other words, he choose to option with less downside risk over the option with more upside risk.
