First time to use, hopefully I mixed it right. If I spray it on a bug should it kill it immediately? How exactly does this stuff work?

Talstar P is a synthetic pyrethroid (bifenthrin). It mimics the action of pyrethrum which is a botanical insecticide. It will work on contact but is not designed to do so at normal label rates. It is a neurotoxin for insects. Label rates will bring the effects on gradually in hopes that insects will not avoid a treated area.

ETA: You can add a product called Kicker( pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide) to the mix and contact kill you will have.

I sprayed it around my house Sunday. I used to have a massive spider problem and haven’t seen a damn thing since Monday. I wouldn’t worry too much about going for the instakill unless that’s what you desire.

I don't know how the stuff works, but it WORKS. I used to pay $50/month to have my yard sprayed for mosquitoes. Then I invested in a 6 gallon backpack sprayer from Harbor Freight and a jug of Talstar from Amazon and I spray every 4-6 weeks or whenever we start to see a few mosquitoes.

The stuff is great. Just put the "mist" tip on the sprayer and hit all the bushes and shrubs and low hanging tree branches.

Will it kill plants and grass? What do you mean by everything?

It burned my grass.

I don’t know if I mixed too much.

Insects, not plants and grass. Not all insects are bad or annoying. Many are essential to a healthy ecosystem, like bees, pollinating wasps....critters like pillbugs break down decaying vegetation into soil components, cicadas (that buzzing hum you hear in the evenings) and many larger flying insects are important bird food.

It's worth remembering that every living thing is generally something else's dinner. Kill the dinner, impact the diner. Another small example: no lighting bugs (fireflies) in south LA anymore due to consistent mosquito spraying for decades. Go to the FL parishes or other parts of LA without consistent parish-wide mosquito spraying and you'll see them.

Also: pyrethrins are a common allergen in humans. So if you're spreading it far & wide, you might end up with a kid or a guest who reacts to it.

Yep. This is why I don't spray the yard for mosquitoes. Too many good insects killed as collateral damage. I spray around the exterior of the house, focusing more heavily around doors and windows, and spot spray inside the house in the corners and under sinks.

Also birds, ducks or any small animal it directly contacts.

The first time I ever used it I was spraying and a large goose startled me from behind, I kept the sprayer on and turned around and got him. Next morning he was dead on the sidewalk. Had no idea it was that powerful.

I did the same. Sprayed about 5 feet out on my yard, then about 6 feet up the brick around my hours and around the perimeter as I would with any insecticide, sprayed driveway across garage door opening and in front of front door.

Jeez--had no idea it could kill something as large as duck. Ugh. I kill as little as possible, mostly just fireants.

My screen porch is more effective than any insecticide, with zero downside.
