Is there any way to control who your kid chats with on fortnite?

My son is 9 and of course his new favorite game is fortnite. His grandmother, my wife's mom, got him a headset without consulting us and of course he wants to use it to chat with other players.
I dont mind him chatting with kids he knows or even some of my adult friends that I know that play it. But I dont want him talking to random strangers. Especially adults. Its not the cussing, just more concerned about potential child predators.
Anyway to control who he can chat with or do they have rooms with mods, etc?
Thanks.

Sure
You can set it up to where he can talk into the mic, but sound (from the game and others he chats with) comes out the TV
You can also download the app for his PS4 or XBOX and view his messages

Throw the headset in the trash. Problem solved

Or just turn off voice chat geez. Playing without a headset is terrible.

So pretty much no. None of those allow him to chat with the abilityfor us to choose who he chats too.

When I was a kid we played videos games by ourselves or with friends in person. Not in basically chat rooms with people from all over the world of all ages. He's nine, not 12 or 13.
I've decided that I'm going to treat him like an adult and probably let him play and chat. But I'm going to have a serious discussion with details on what type of people exists in this world a d examples of things that have happened to other kids.
No patent wants to have it, but I figure itll help protect him better by knowing the dangers, what to look for as far as suspicious behavior, etc.
Its Fortnite today, itll be a other game or version of social media later. Or worse it could be someone he meets in real life... like a horny hot highschool teacher with the opposite of daddy issues.

Yes. Turn off voice chat in fortnite and have the kid use the consoles party chat

My son just started playing on the PC and we set it so no one can friend request him and disabled the voice chat. He can type chat with people in his party but that's it. Yeah, we're overprotective but I'd rather let him earn trust and gain freedom by proving he can handle it.

How else is he supposed to learn all the new derogatory terms for gays and blacks?

What will you be protecting him from?
He has access to the internet.
