I find it weird that a 6-11 shot blocking monster has never had more than 11 rebounds in a game. He's also never scored more than 19 points in a game, had more than 1 assist in a game, and has never even attempted a 3 in a game either.
I know that the way the experts are describing this kid is 'huge potential' and 'high ceiling', but to make that trade for what amounts to a project pick is kind of head scratching.

quote:
In a draft without a clear worthy number two pick, Jaxson Hayes can go anywhere from number two to late lottery in this year’s draft. His tools, athleticism, and fluidity will make any lottery team take a look at him. If everything goes well, Jaxson will be one of the three best players from this draft class

So a late bloomer who just turned 19 with unlimited upside for a team needing a big man and not in a rush to compete for rings?
Seems like it is worth the risk. We can afford to fail with this pick. We can afford to teach the kid the game. He is likely still growing too. Give him a few years to learn how to play C and he could be a monster.
As a bonus, he shoots 70% from charity stripe. That is good enough to be a close out player.

He's an elite athlete who was more focused on football until his senior year of high school. He's definitely a project, but he has the long-term potential to be one of the very best centers in the league.
We aren't going to win a title next year. We can take a guy who's raw and see if we can coach him up.

Has high IQ and is very coachable. If we can develop him, he has a sky high ceiling. Very smooth big man.

He was a late bloomer who got into basketball late.
This is a project as in this guy projects. He's not like one of those 7 foot guys who you need to teach how to walk.

I guess we have 5 years to teach him how to shoot, dribble, and pass. I agree with everything you said. We have infinite first round picks in future drafts right now so we can take a shot on a big like this. But this has to be one of the worst center classes in recent memory so I think he was overvalued, but yeah he definitely has potential if we develop him. Wish we would have done a different trade if this was our plan, but I’m not necessarily mad about the pick because of his upside.
Still curious about his fit with Zion since he can’t space the floor at all, but defensively they’ll be unreal.

Huge project for #8. Hope it works out.

Get him bulked up, coach him, and in a few years hopefully he'll bloom into a monster.

Father was a NFL tight end. He played wide receiver in high school before the crazy growth spurts. The kid has great hands and footwork but is raw as a big man. Scouts say there's a great chance he will at least be a good modern NBA starting center who defends and runs the floor.
