Here's a longer reply. He didn't have a football offer from us. If he were to join the football team his first year, he'd count against our 25 signees, and we don't want that, so there's no way that he'd play football his first year at LSU.

If, after that, he wanted to play football, I'm sure he'd be allowed to try out for the team. If we had a spot available and Coach O thought that he was worthy of a scholarship, then he'd be allowed to join and count against the 85, and then he could play both sports.

That is the Bear Bryant Rule! The SEC made that rule after Bryant began signing swimmers who could swim and track men who couldn't track ... to play for his football team.
