Where is the scouting structure? Are we truly canvassing the entire country for young talent? Maybe that’s happening but I doubt it.

However we know it’s happening in baseball football and basketball. The challenge with soccer is that the talent has to be recognized and scouted at a much earlier age. Our society and culture is not used to that.

The big 3 American sports start scouting in junior high some but then mostly high school. For soccer players, that’s too late.

So do we have a nation wide scouting network identifying soccer talent starting at age 6 like in other countries? Until that happens we’ll never truly get there.

Didn't Atlanta United sign a kid they saw kicking a ball around at a bus stop to their academy? The new academies in MLS are going to help us exponentially, though it won't be noticed right away at the senior level.

There’s no national body that does that, though. The people’s passion for those sports drives that scouting and development, and that does not exist here for soccer.

I think US Soccer should hyper-focus on two or three development academies. One organization can’t focus on this entire country, trying to fashion diamonds out of coal. It’s just too big and there are too few good coaches.

But one organization could focus exclusively on NYC kids and SoCal kids, making sure that every talented kid knows the opportunities provided by soccer and has available the best possible level of facilities and coaching.
There are 3 or 4 million kids between NYC and LA county. You’re telling me we couldn’t make 23 international players from that, if we focused on it?
