In most cases, you’re probably fine. But you HAVE to remove all excess WD40 or it could cause problems. There are many better options today. The “this is the way we’ve always done it” line bugs the shite out of me.

Its not going to hurt a firearm when you are just taking tape off. I don't think its bad for cleaning the whole thing either. I have heard not to use on bikes though.
