Anyone have success fishing this river? In the past while boat riding I have seen big fish show up on the depth finder and I had to wonder what it could be. Any input appreciated.

That river in the summer is a "fish at your own risk" river!

I never had much luck fishing it for bass, bream or catfish but they’re there. Best thing I ever caught on that river was a buzz. As for big fish that could show up on a depth finder could be anything. Shad/bait can look like a large fish on a depth finder if you’re not used to looking at it. There are large gar, catfish, and I’ve seen a dead paddlefish floating.

I was wondering if it might be catfish or bull sharks.

Go during the week if possible, the weekends are busy down there. If on the weekend then fish north of the hwy 22 bridge, blood river branch, less traffic there. I can't say I've had much luck but there are some fish around.

Those big things on the sonar are probably big gar...see them rolling all the time.

Yeap, I've seen a 10' Alligator gar about 20-30 ft up the Killian Bayou from the Tickfaw River. I was in A 12' bateau and it was close to being as long as the boat

When I first moved back to BR I would fish the run outs in late spring and early fall of course during the week when the kids were in school. Water stays cooler and not as stagnant.

I would catch some spotted bass that again are small they pack a punch for a bass. Largest spotted bass I caught was 3-1/2 lbs on a Topwater. Largest bass I caught in that river 5lb bass. Besides that an avg trip small bass around 1/2 lb to 2 lbs.

Bass fishing has come a long way last few years. I’ve personally had some good days but a friend of mind has destroyed them within the last year. He caught over 100 bass in a day and caught 2 fish over 6lbs another day. This time of year the boat traffic is too severe to fish but fall and early early spring is money.

I bought a camp on the lower Tickfaw 1987 and continue to own it today. Over the years I have seen many changes in the fishing conditions. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the bass fishing was great. I caught many bass over 4 lbs. and the largest was over 6 lbs. Than Hurricane Andrew hit southwest La. and caused a considerable fish kill. The La. Wildlife and Fisheries restocked several rivers, including the Tickfaw, with thousands of Florida largemouth bass fingerlings. Damned if I know what happened to the fingerlings, but I don't think they took to the area.

Than starting in 2005 a string of hurricanes and tropical storms hit; Katrina, Gustov, Allison, Ike, Issac, to name some. All had a negative effect on the Tickfaw. Also during that time the recreation boating increased substantially. It is almost impossible to fish after 9:30am on the weekend.

On a good note, storms have decreased over the last 3 to 4 years and fishing has begun to improve. Channel catfish are very plentiful and I have caught good, sizeable catches. Bass are plentiful but small, mostly in the 1 to 2 1/2 lb. range. I believe things are improving with the huge bream and shad populations offering the larger fish a steady supply of food. Just hope Mother Nature will keep the storms at bay.

We have a camp on the Amite, an I was thinking that with the spillway being opened, it probably dumped some of those big Mississippi River cats into the lake. Once it closes and the salinity returns it will probably drive them up into Amite and Tickfaw.

I would be fishing week days. I’m retired. Any tips for catfish and bream?

I use noodle floats. 12' of line with 2 hooks at 8' and 12' and weighted. Bait with small pieces of hot dog marinated in garlic powder and red (Strawberry, Cherry, or Rasberry) jello mix.

Bream bite best on crickets or red wigglers. Fish close to the cypress knees.

My friend uses the hot dogs coated with garlic powder then microwaves them until almost burned...that hardens them up and helps them stay on the hook better. You might not want to do that when the wife can see...or smell...it.
Never heard of the jello thing. I might have to try that sometime.
