Well, he's from Maryland. Maybe he just wanted to go home.

Is it an upgrade to his position at LSU? Did he recruit? Do you know what his responsibilities were at LSU?

Billy Embody had tweeted something about this about a week or so ago. Even in Embody’s message, it seemed to be a very under the radar move as Billy said something about him just stumbling over the information, which is odd, b/c he is pretty tied into the program. I tried to find the tweet, but couldn’t locate again.
Merritt’s biggest role on staff was for recruiting purposes. He had ties to TX recruiting especially from his days and contacts with John Lucas.
Wade also said in an interview last fall that Merritt was in charge of coordinating all the on campus recruiting visits.
It isn’t clear why he left other than maybe he just wanted to be back in an on court coaching role, since he used to be that at ASU. Conspiracy theorists may say he was possibly pissed over Tasmin getting asst position over him. Who knows. Hate to see him go though.

I hope this doesn't have an adverse affect on recruiting for next season. I mean, these guys make contacts and build relationships with recruits. But I know Wade will get someone else in there that can pick up where Merritt left off. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Merritt’s move to Morgan State had been in the works for a while. He wanted to get back into an on court/recruiting position, rather than his admin spot where he was at LSU.
He was not a candidate to replace Benford, as the position needed to be filled by a black coach. It would not have been a good look for LSU to have no black coaches on staff.
Merritt is in Wade’s inner circle and will be a candidate the next time an opening is available.
There were zero hard feelings, as Merritt is a professional.

Thanks for the info, Bubba.
To make clear, I didn’t think he was mad or that reason he left was b/c of Tasmin; but I know how ignorant and dumb some of the people on here can be. (e.g. Jack Daniel and his moronic response above).
I never said outright before Tasmin was hired, but when the question was asked of who would replace Benford, I always mentioned Tasmin as an option and felt he would be the direction Wade would go. I felt that for many different reasons, but one of the big ones being that he had to have some diversity on staff and wouldn’t hire another white coach.
Any insight on how the team is looking early on in summer practices and workouts?

It's pretty sad when a school has to be concerned about diversity, and not hiring the best coach available. And I say this as no knock on Tasmin. He may well be the better candidate. Due to the race factor however, he was guaranteed the job if it came down to him and Merritt. Of course I realize we would be DESTROYED on the recruiting trail with an all white staff.

Then how do you not understand why diversity is important?

And Tasmin didn’t replace Benford, Heiar did, and he was already making more than Benford.
Mitchell is not going to make shite. Merritt was already liking making more in his position. I don’t think Mitchell comes close to the $250k Armstrong was making as a 3rd assistant. He has zero coaching experience

The guy moved from an administrator to a coach on the floor.

Who are you talking about?
Because if it’s Merritt you are talking about, I know that. That’s what I said in my original post as to why he probably left.

Well lester dipshit, if you read and understood my post, (not your strong suit), I didn't state ANYWHERE I don't understand the promotion of Tasmin, it's just sad that in today's political climate, (and EVERYTHING is political today), that we can't just have the best staff possible without worrying who is black and who is white. Nothing more or nothing less.

I don't think it's a "diversity" move in the political sense like you see at seemingly every university as much as it is a need to have a black coach on staff because 90%, if not more, of the kids you will be recruiting are black.
It's human nature to want to associate with other people who look like you and share cultural similarities. That's not racism. Just a fact of life. I suspect more kids could relate to a young black man such as Mitchell moreso than a middle-aged white guy. That's not to say you should have a staff that consist of all one race. But I completely understand why Wade would want a black coach on staff, even if he was objectively less qualified than another white coach on staff.
Wade and LSU aren't being PC. They're trying to best relate to the kids they are trying to get to play for them.

I trust Coach Wade to do what is best for the program. Mitchel has earned the position,IMO. He has been a great Tiger, hope he will be a great coach and recruiter.
He has earned his chance.
