Bill Gates tweeted this and added that he is always amazed by the disconnect between what we see in the news and the reality of the world around us.

Just in case you can't read the graph. The first graph shows the real numbers, the second one shows what people google and the last two show what two media outlets report on (first as in the first one from the left).

This isn't all that shocking, tbh. The media will always report on homicide and terrorism more (even if they're both grossly underrepresented in the stats) bc they both involve one person taking the life of another.

Aunt Kay dying from a heart attack at 84 years old isn't near as newsworthy.

It's like when people who are afraid of flying because they fear the plane will crash, but doesn't think twice about getting in their vehicle every day driving around.

Flying is much safer.

I have said for a long time heart disease needs some ribbon NFL players wear, or whatever to raise awareness.

Yeah.. I mean, they would be doing live reports from the hospital every day

And while I was aware heart disease and cancer takes more lives than anything else, I guess the part that was interesting to me, is the fact that the leading cause of death is the least googled.

While being fat can lead to heart disease, it’s far from the only reason people develop it. Lesson to take from this is just because you’re not overweight doesn’t mean you’re in the clear.

I mean why would someone dying of a heart attack or cancer be news? It happens everyday. The something that doesn't happen everyday is news.

I don't really get the point of this graphic at all.

This is interesting. It'll unfortunately be misused as the basis for why things like crime (think minority angle) and terrorism (think Muslim angle) get too much coverage.

People are interested in crime and terrorism because there isn't a lot they can do to avoid being killed by those things. Those things are mysterious and violent and have impacts beyond the immediate death/injury. Heart disease doesn't really do that.

Media responds to that interest, feeds and grows it, but it doesn't create it.

Yup, "the silent killer." And it's sad, bc many people can control it to a certain extent through proper diet and exercise. This graph proves it's just not on our radar, and it needs to be.

This is true, but feeding and growing all the hype over homicide and terrorism....is more damaging than the actual acts themselves. Look at all the riots and commotion we've had in this country over something that essentially doesn't exist.

That and people really need to stop wasting time worrying about terrorist. I mean, you always want to be aware, but for it to be 32% of what the media reports on is proof that fear really does sell.
