and I haven't clicked any links on the tweets, but I read elsewhere that the links lead to him asking for btc and offering to double it or something

When McAfee lived in Belize people tried to get him to make "donations", pay bribes, pay protection, etc. So as a friendly gesture, the tech-millionaire gave the local govt officials laptop computers as a gift. What the officials didn't know was that McAfee installed a backdoor on those computers and was recording all the corrupt things they did. When they found out, shite hit the fan.
