I read it last year, I believe. I enjoyed it.
I think what makes it impressive to me was the reason why he wrote it. A friend challenged him that he couldn't write a good book based on a lame topic, so he said he could do it with two. Friend chose Pokemon and the Lost Roman Legion.
"The Aeronaut's Windlass" was a better book than any of the "Alera" six, but it's book 1 of a series and who knows with the others will come out.
