As you can see, his arms and face are bare. There are newsreels of WWII Japanese soldiers walking around like that after being hit by flamethrowers. Apparently it puts you in immediate shock.

Yeah. I think all of his nerve endings were destroyed at that point. Couldn't even feel the pain.
