I heard Dr. Beck Weathers give a motivational speech several years ago. He had been left for dead in the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster. (See Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air).

Dr. Weathers said it had been an ego trip to climb the highest peak on each continent, but upon reflection he realized it was a very selfish thing to do to his family.

Everest, despite being the tallest, isn't the most impressive... if these people really want to impress, they need to die on, i mean climb Annapurna or K2

But regardless. I don’t think they’re egomaniacs necessarily as much as thrill seekers and in search of doing something few have ever accomplished.
