You have to consider that The Great Danton was prepared to face death to see Borden hang for the death of his wife. That same consideration was passed to every clone and they kept marching into the machine. Here's the rub, once in the box, Danton realizes he doesn't want to die, but the copy that is Okay with dying has already been made.
