The idea we should hurt ourselves simply to hurt China more is crazy.

I import for a major retailer.
Good.
Then perhaps you can answer the question I was asking:
Reports are the CPC has successfully mitigated many tariff effects at the 10% level. How much did Chinese glove wholesale pricing actually increase with the 10% tariff?
Results for the 10% varied by vendor. Some vendors were able to mitigate the 10% The Chinese government increased the VAT rebate for the factories and some vendors passed that on in costs; some did not. Gloves for instance, did not pass much on (high margin category), but we were fully aware of what the new cost would be for the 25% tariff.

Mooresville. You're right up the road. On the lake?
Near, not on - but a great place to live.

Please stop talking to me about companies
Please give me a daily or monthly product and the exact increase in costs please
Lets analyze batteries
I buy batteries at costco for $15 that lasts me 6mnths. So i might have to pay 20 now so in one year thats a 10 increase so less then a dollar per month
Please continue with more examples
I'm not sure exactly what your are trying to prove here. The fact is that the tariffs will impact costs for consumers - the larger the %, the larger the impact and 25% is a large impact. The actual damage will vary and unfortunately like most policies - the true impact will be viewed from the Monday morning QB role several months from now...until then, the exact details will be foggy.
If you are looking for answers in daily commodities such as groceries, then I can't see the direct impact on milk, bread, or water. But all of those companies purchase items that are needed to run their factory and those costs will be passed on. You say to stop talking about companies, but it's relevant...b/c they provide you the goods.

Funny, but fundamental difference between IB and me - I hate politics...usually stay off this board completely b/c it's so opinionated...but I thought I could add a little value to the conversation since tariffs have been a part of my life for several months now...it's added a TON of unwanted work on retailers...

Vietnam is putting it's money into infrastructure...not corporate espionage. They only have so much money so they have to choose (unlike your beloved China) and they seem to have chosen trade, not piracy. As such, your point is moot.
If only. China is building subs and space-based weapons platforms with the largess off our stolen IP and manufacturing. It's insane that this can continue at our expense...and it won't; lest Trump be outed. Of course, China is being a loan shark to many places in the World, such that they will have certain property Rights...enforcing them is another thing.

This entire trade war is to help those US businesses in China. They want to stay but they want IP protection and the end of forced partnerships and more banking alternatives.
I don't want to pay more so those people will get those things in China but most here obviously do.
God, you're stupid.

LoL wut?
Its to help American workers regain jobs that US companies shipped oversees. No one gives a frick about US companies prospering in China

It is not huge relative to their sales but the combine cost economy wide will impact discretionary spending. Any government reduction of overall discretionary spending is not a positive for the economy.
If Obama had imposed these tariffs this board would have lost their mind. You all know that is true.
There are strategic issues with escalating trade war too. If we start limiting commerce between our country and other countries we incentivized the other countries to create replacements for our products whether it is computer operating systems (ie to replace droid OS now that google has cut Huawei off) or airplanes.
As you weigh all these wonderful things you think these tariffs will accomplish you should be honest with yourself about the negative things.

No I cannot answer your simple question because you cannot give me an example of a product you want to know about and the amount of the inputs on the harmonized code list I gave you a link too in that product.
You would be a much better contributor to these conversations if you at least attempted to understand the mechanics of the tariffs and the goals of the tariffs. It is not hard to understand and you can read the actual documents.
You are alone--very few of the talking heads have taken the time to understand the goals either so you can't rely on them.
Dagan McDowell and Maria Bartiromo understand them. Most of the commentators on CNBC in the mornings understand them.

Have you consider that we are forcing them to compete with us on things like operating systems and airplanes--things that today the buy from us?

I don't know Tree 20 but I think he works for one of our sometime customers (hopefully a much bigger for us some day).
Nobody that I know that post here is more exposed to the tariff impacts than he and his co workers are.
I will say this and I think he will agree---anyone that thinks these tariffs are not being paid by the US consumers is in denial and simply does not understand the impact--Trump included if continues to say that. This next round will be apparent to you.

We have been in a trade war with China
We have been for years.
Over the past two decades, China was eating our lunch by hook or crook. In dealing with the Chinese autocracy, we emulated hopeful pacifism of past failures.
Essentially we were testing Einstein's definition of insanity --- doing the same thing again, yet expecting a different result. It was reminiscent of the Allied Powers' approach in the mid/late 1930s. Peace-in-our-time, Japan-is-no-threat, etc. In the face of totalitarian aggression whether military, trade, espionage, etc., we damn well know how well pacifism works --- It NEVER works in such an instance! EVER!
Yet that is the approach you suggest.
So on these matters when you attempt to sarcastically critique what "I think," do it with the advantage of knowing my response in advance. Know that I'll reliably parry by forcing you to weigh other "wonderful things" such as concomitant Chinese goals, as well as US costs of China's achieving them.
What would those costs be?
