Thanks Shakespeare, that was very insightful. Just because Jon didn’t end up where you wanted didn’t make it a “simple plot device”. His character from his resurrection onward was anything but simple. You can use reductionist reasoning all you want and say every damn character on the show was a simple plot device.

The ending to Jon's character arc was fine with me. He never wanted power and only accepted it reluctantly. I could have seen Dany's death affecting him so much that he renounces his claim to the throne and banishes himself north of the Wall.

That's not the issue here. The issue is the purpose of the Lord of the Light, not whether or not Jon Snow should have ended up on the Iron Throne.

Every character is a plot device. By definition. Some have more impact than others...
