Not exactly classic rock, but I saw “douchebags” and Axl Rose immediately popped into my head.

Totally agree ! He would show up at shows sometimes 1 to 2 hours late. A few time he didn't show up at all, and was notorious for walking out in the middle of a show.

As a guitarist I’d like to add Yngwie Malmsteen to that list....

Why is Santana a douchebag?

He always comes across as humble and hippyish

I agree with you. I saw where he reuninted with an old bandmate from the 60s who had become homeless and he helped him back on his feet and let him perform and record with him again on occasion.

A far cry from what you hear about Henley and others.

If you haven't read Hagar's book 'Red', I highly recommend it. A very honest book and Sammy loved Eddie but EVH's drinking got the best of him.

2. Carlos Santana Thanks to fabulous mid-1960s hit makers like East L.A.’s Premiers and Bay City, Michigan's’s ? & the Mysterians, Chicano rock was established as a brilliant, swaggering brand of Big Beat. But luckily for the corporate gringo, along came Carlos Santana, a guitarist of such clichéd predictability and flat affect that he established a new low of stereotypical Latin-tinged rock. When that, inevitably, wore out its welcome, Santana slunk through a variety of ludicrous, commercially driven, chameleonic moves, none of them worth the wax they was pressed on. And today? Been to Macy’s lately? “Carlos by Carlos footwear, truly trendy, mixed materials for fashion forward footwear.”

These seems to be more about their opinion of them than about being a douchbag.

They cite Dylan as being a persona and therefore a douchbag. Yeah, no shite. But he's still Bob Dylan.

Could someone please define exactly what a "douchebag" is?

Is it:

1. Being rude to fans?
2. Treating waiters and other service personnel badly?
3. Mistreating and/or exploiting employees?
4. Ripping off other musicians?
5. Pulling the "Do you know who I am" card?
6. Giving smarmy, pretentious interviews?
7. Other

Not having Don Henley on that list immediately invalidates it in total.

Also this. Robbie is a turbodouche.

Chris Robinson should probably also be up there, didn't he ask / demand original members of the Black Crowes at one point to go from having a share to become salaried / session players or something like that.

also

10. Jerry Garcia Garcia’s gutless, drug-addled brand of candyass jamming wreaked havoc on rock ‘n’ roll, derailing what had been a form of rebel confrontation and paving the way for spineless hippie quasi-folk. Garcia’s guitar was always listless, flabby and aimless. He never went anywhere and always took his sweet time doing it, yet is endlessly venerated as a soloist on par with the greatest names in musical history. Hogwash. The ultimate illustration of Garcia’s dead-from-the-neck-up approach came when an SFPD officer, patrolling Golden Gate Park at noontime in January 1985, got an acrid whiff of Garcia’s burning cocaine — the peace-and-love icon was freebasing in the front seat of his BMW. Far out, man.

So he ranked Garcia at 10 because, the write doesn't like his music/style, other people rank him high as a guitarist and Garcia was one of the few people in rock to do drugs I guess?

quote:

7. Lou Reed A chronic dullard whose turgid output steadily degenerated over six interminable decades, Reed, like his stale monotone vocal delivery, was so relentlessly and unengagingly depressive that the approximately 20 minutes of influential rock ‘n’ roll he participated in wholly invalidates itself — and brings to mind the infinite monkey theorem (wherein a primate with a typewriter would eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare). If, as Reed so pretentiously did, one feels compelled to identify oneself as “a poet from New York City,” fine. Just stay the hell away from rock ‘n’ roll.

And doesn't even really have anything to say about why Reed is a douche other than a feeling that he is pretentious I guess.

Seems like the writer is a little off in the head or was just trying to get clicks or something.

I don't care for the Dead's music, but the writer is using the music to attack Garcia personally

I'm as a big a Velvets fan as you'll ever meet, and even I think Lou Reed was an a-hole

The list in the linked article is just basically the ten most popular artists that the author personally hates, for whatever reasons.

Probably the only two on here who can truly be called 'douchebags' in the traditional sense of the word are David Crosby and Phil Spector.

For those who haven't read the piece, try to guess who the author is describing in these quotes:
quote:

A lifeless groaner who hypocritically spices up the most clichéd, meathead masculinity with a pathetic drizzle of Woody Guthrie-damaged, nakedly opportunistic “social conscience”
quote:

A second rate pop hack whose mind numbingly dull doggerel effectively hobbled rock ‘n’ roll
quote:

a self-appointed authority figure who did nothing but ceaselessly bitch, piss and moan without ever offering a single solution or so much as an attempt at constructive criticism

Speaking of Axl Rose showing up late, I was at the GNR/Metallica show in the Superdome during their famous tour together. After Metallica played, GNR didn't come on until somewhere between 2-3 hours later. The funny thing was nobody cared because they were putting camera shots of the crowd on the huge overhead screens in the Dome and EVERY girl they put the camera on was flashing themselves(some their bottoms and some their tops). The crowd was going wild and didn't seem to care if AXL ever came out. When he did finally come out he made some crack about the crowd being lame and someone in the front yelled out that HE was putting everyone to sleep. He said "oh I'm putting everyone to sleep?"lol Luckily he didn't leave the stage and actually played a blistering set. Yeah, but talk about an extreme douche!

This list is ridiculous...the people on it laughable and Steve Miller off if says it all...ask Miles Davis. And Garcia was smoking heroin not freebase when he was arrested. Give us facts, not bs.

I think he has kind of cooled down in recent years, but Elton John was well known for being a complete and utter douchebag to just about anyone who worked with him, and he would go off without warning.

The only douchey thing i've heard about Carlos Santana is that he tried to keep Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie from being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame with Santana. Now they obviously seem to be getting along fine since Santana (the band) reunited a few years ago. Maybe he was mad about them leaving Santana for Journey?
