Does anyone know why you cant fish the lake behind the Pennington Biomedical Research Center? It's overpopulated with bass and you can easily just walk in there but you always get kicked out by a security golf cart. There's a boat ramp and 2 docks but still no fishing. Why?

Fish it at night.

A buddy's son is at LSU and has caught some hammer bass out of it, at night.

I didn't even know there was a pond there and I work in BR often. I'd love to fish it at lunch. Looking forward to some answers.

One word “liability” comes to mind

I may or may not have fished there and filled up a few ice chests with bass

If one would happen to fish at night there, I would suggest topwater and hang on tight

Three words come to mind

Every. Single. Cast

Used to fish it at night in HS but that was after we got kicked off once during the day by a security guard and then we tried a few months later with a different strategy and an off duty police officer saw us, drove his truck up to us inside the fence, and called us by name (we had never given anyone our name before) and threatened to cuff and stuff us...

buttttttt... the fishing is crazy there. I know of a few double digit fish that have been pulled out of there and many 8 and 9s. Red Stick Fly club used to have a deal with pennington to where they could flyfish out there but i dont know if thats still a thing

You mean the lake off Quail Dr. by the LDWF. That's where Green Jeans release the big bass donated to the states Share-a-Lunker program to spawn. They seine the fry every June and release them in selected lakes around the state. You don't want to be caught fishing in there.

Used to fish it in the early 2000’s. Topwater by moonlight. Chunk them up on the bank and the round them up. Sometimes the foxes would beat us to them. It was primarily dinks but that was along time ago. Black buzz bait was the ticket. Got ran off several times but never caught.....miss them days and that Adrenalin Rush!

Is there a gate or something you have to jump over in order to get to this pond?

I've heard it's liability issues. I thought about going but had two group of friends get busted and both by Wildlife & Fisheries. One group got off with a warning, the other two at a different time got ticketed for no license and trespassing. Not worth it to me!

Damnit, I lived less than a mile from that lake. I used to bring my dog to swim in it almost every day during summer and would run around it daily before I got in a relationship and let myself go. Never knew the fishing was that fire, never tried it.
