I suppose so, but I think a lot of the tragedy stemmed from the state itself
still men and women took actions that they knew would cost them their lives to save the lives of worthless communist wives, children and other family and friends and yes even strangers
can you not recognize individual heroic actions despite the political, religious, or other views of the actors?

Of course I can, at what point did I say the individual men and women weren’t heroic?

Very well said. The Soviet state was an abomination but that didn’t mean the Russian people were short on bravery and heroism. The “liquidators” were some of the bravest men to have ever lived. Most knew damn well that they wouldn’t survive but they did it to save their families, and to a lesser degree, their country. I think ep 2 also showed the side of Gorbachev that led to him being such a great leader. He had his issues in Afghanistan, but he also showed the side of the leader who ultimately pulled the plug on Communism.

Sixteen communist wives
Thirty-two hardened deadened tiny eyes
Staring at the radioactive tan
Of thirty-two clenching wrinkled little hands
Seventeen company men
Out of which only twelve will make it back again
Sergeant sent a letter to five Ukranian wives
whose tears drip down from ten little eyes
Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause the Soviet Union can, and the Soviet Union can't say no
And the Soviet Union does, if the Soviet Union says it's so
It's so
