Do you mean a 2 stage or is the variable speed something different?

Interesting. I have carrier 2 stage units in my home and live them. I like how I can set them to run at both a temp point and a humidity point. This looks like an advancement from that technology

Wick, my last system was like that, but when I replaced it, I wanted more air flow.

I've only used them in industrial applications, but they are definitely more efficient, by alot.

I'm a Trane dealer and can tell you, they are the best thing on the market when it comes to overall comfort. However, they come with a higher cost than a single stage and two stage setup.

As a Trane dealer, are the Hyperion air handlers usually, or always, required to be matched with dual stage or variable capacity condensing units (Trane) or can they be matched with single stage Trane condensing unit? Are they significantly quieter (indoor noise) than the “standard” single stage/two stage air handler?

So you can match a single stage condenser with a Hyperion air handler, the TAM9 for instance can be matched up with an XR14, or XR16. But for pricing purposes we offer a less expensive variable speed air handler option that isn't Hyperion. They are designed to be much quieter than single stage. But they do run for longer periods, they just use less energy and only run "just enough" to maintain the desired temperature.

Since you answered the OPs question I don’t feel bad hijacking the thread a bit.

What are your thoughts on an in-line or whole home dehumidifier for areas like south Louisiana where humidity is such an issue?

Not a hijack at all. Every home I go to, I run a heat load (manual J). The app I use is designed by Trane Engineers, which allows me to custom design a new system for any home. To answer your question, high humidity is one of the main struggles we deal with here. If the home is sized properly, then there is no need for a dehumidifier. However, that is not always the case...the answer to that is variable speed, whether it's Trane or another brand. The key is knowing/understanding how it operates. It runs for a longer period of time than your standard single stage system, but it's running at a lower capacity. So say you have a 4 ton system.. you're not getting all 4 tons at once with a variable speed system. The moisture is removed from the air, and the dry air that is left is what's cooled. When I present my options to my customers, generally I call the Variable Speed system the "Dream Machine"...due to how efficient it operates, as well as how comfortable it will make the space.

I’m familiar with the variable speed or 2 stage systems, but recently heard about inline or whole home dehumidifiers.

I’m in the early stages of a new construction custom build, so just gathering information right now. When I replaced the unit in my current home the AC guy said it’s not typically worth it to do 2 stage unless the whole system is engineered for it.
