Although, I'm confused as to why they need a bridge.

The bridge is for SECURITY reasons, and not so much safety. It is so a student never has to leave the cocoon of the campus once he is on campus. The way it is now, a student has to leave then re enter to go to PE class or any activity in the gym.
Fr. Fronk’s main goal upon coming in a year or so ago was security. Also remember, he is a lifelong military guy.....all about security.
This was done to comply with security measures and for insurance purposes.
