I just changed my wheel bearings on my 2011 Silverado. The only indicator I had was what you are describing. Jack up a front tire and spin it to listen for any grinding. Grab the tire with one hand on top and one on bottom and work it back and forth. There shouldn’t be any play in that direction. One of my wheel bearings was really bad but they both needed to be changed.
