Honestly, it is mostly just a big FU to Yankees. I doubt that MANY Southerners are pining away for a return to the days of the Antebellum South, but we know that the Battle Flag annoys the crap out of Yankees.

I can get behind this rationale. Also, it just looks cool, connotations aside. I'd be cool with folks just saying any of those two things other than the bullshite "heritage" nonsense. So much more to the South than just Confederate apologetics (and I say that as someone born in the south and lived mostly in the South and in TX).

I grew up in the 90s and vividly remember people with shirts saying, "The south will rise again"

It was so prevalent that I thought it was normal. You grow; you learn. Some of us anyway.
