I would like to add Jonas Salk
He discovered and developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. Did a lot of research and helped changed the medical field in our understanding of viruses. I believe he tried to work on a cure for HIV/AIDS but eventually died.

Salk and Norman Borlaug probably belong way, way up there near the top of the list. Borlaug is the GOAT of model Americans.
As far as the number of human beings directly and positively impacted by their work, they - along with maybe Oppenheimer - are clear cut at the top.
