About to pick up a new puppy. Anyone have any advice on trainers? Someone recommended mill pond trainers, but I’ve never heard of them. TIA

Brandon Menard is a good friend of mine that trains just south of there. He is a very good trainer. His runs Cypress Bottom Retrievers.

Buyer Beware
When spending close to $5,000, it is wise to preview the operator/operations firsthand multiple times. Some trainers have more astute clientele, some can teach both dog and handler, some can do neither and their clients are oblivious . Watch out for the trainer with tons of dogs and little training property. Don't be fooled by $2 ribbons unless they are Finished/Master passes. You will be "rushed" to play the HRC hunt test game because it's a hook to keep you committed to the monthly fee. Hands should be laid on your animal at a minimum of 5 days per week. Program; which one will the trainer follow and why?
Are the trainers dogs happy, clean, healthy, responsive? Does he give each animal 100% effort and work for success while in the yard and field?
You wouldn't drop Jr off at a school you did not check out, don't do it with your dog.

I'll give a second recommendation for Brandon. Great guy, very professional and driven, good price. He is very passionate about training retrievers.

I used Ken Vidrine in Opelousas and was happy with the results. His son, Chad, is also a trainer in Youngsville or Broussard.

My office is on Lake St and busy as hell, lets dog out of kennel and he heads to Lake St. Dog had zero clue what HERE meant or sit or fetch or heel but he had eaten well in those four months. Six months later i returned a dog that would handle and pick up multiple marks but was wasted because the owner would never participate. You have to participate in order to learn how to handle your dog.

Chuck McCall; Chumac kennels
Nother young kid that’s doing solid work from what I see, on 61 I believe but he’s probably gone north by now.
Mark Smith; Southlake in Laplace also outstanding.
Go see the all and figure out which program/personality/work you like best.
Also think Andy Fontenot is back in La training again.

Ken trained my dog also. Good trainer and guy. Will shoot straight with you. If dog is not what it should be, he will tell you.

So I assume you train dogs labs?
I’ve had 3 labs, had my first trained by a local trainer that I made good friends with. Went and worked with him and learned the process of him working other dogs in various stages , as well as getting to see mine go through the full program up to me running him in a MH test.
Next dog, I trained myself and believe he turned out better.
My current female I trained is an absolute beast in the field and in any HT or FT.
I’ve been contemplating getting into the training world but obviously would like more guidance.
How would I go about getting on with a good trainer to learn a bit more under?
Obviously I can’t build a slab and some kennels and expect customers without recommendations.
But my goal is to have a kennel of my own and do it as a living.
I have thought about maybe taking on one or two dogs as that’s all I have room for currently , but not sure if simply showing what I did with my current dog and past dog would be enough to get customers.
Any suggestions?
