It was 1975, and newspapers around the USA got documents from the FBI on a candidate

1- Anybody know what the candidate's name was?
2- What did the FBI docs say?
EDIT to put the details in:
His name was Henry Jackson. Nick name was Scoop.
When he entered the race he was the odds on favorite to win. He was the Front runner.
HE was very anti communism and anti USSR. So the KGB launched a disinformation campaign. They forged FBI Documents and sent them to the newspapers around the USA....
The docs claimed he was gay. And the leading candidate that the USSR was nervous about ended up losing the primary even though he had carried NY. The disinformation campaign of the KGB caused his money to dry up.
But never before has Russia so attacked the USA presidential election

I thought the Russians never interfered in any election before 2016. Someone should tell the dems about this.

They know. Hell they even asked for help. Brother Teddy Kennedy asked them for help to defeat Reagan.

I’m gonna guess Ford, but there is documented papers that the FBI has been used by political parties to “investigate” their advisories as early as FDR

I think you're referring to Scoop Jackson from Washington and the Soviet Union pulled a stunt similar to the Steel Dossier that claimed he was gay and the newspapers ran with it.
Ruined him, he died a few years later if I remember correctly.
The guy was an enigma. He wasn't old school Strom Thurmond democrat ... he was a big time LBJ liberal progressive but he hated the USSR and was a bit of a war hawk.
I think he died during Reagan's first term because I am pretty sure I was in Italy around that time or either it was right when we invaded Granada or the Marine Barracks in Beirut were blow up because Reagan made a big deal out of his death and Tip O'Neal praised him but there was a lot going on at the time.
Crazy days but you're right to make a comparison to then and now. fricking Dan Rather was one of the main ones that ruined ole Scoop. SNL ran a skit about him in '75 or '76 too.
