Kobach might be so explosive that his nomination makes it worse, but I'm willing to take that chance.

Trump is the leader of the GOP and a move like this is necessary to call out the hacks in his party who support open borders and clarify what side of the issue you fall on.
In short, Daddy needs to whip out the switch and start spanking the kids.
If Trump doesn't hire an immigration hawk as tough as Kobach, he's a weak daddy who lets his kids run all over him.
