All I can figure is he played for a 3A HS in SC and got a little exposure on the AAU circuit as a teammate with Zion at one point. Sounds more like he really bloomed late.

They said Avery Johnson is the only other player to average double digit assists. Did it twice.

Did they always keep track of assists as a stat was my question to him. Anyone know?

It didn’t become an official stat until the 80s I believe.

7 turnovers, but it seemed like they didn't matter.

Dunno, I've seen Maravich's assist stats at LSU.

Probably a stat by LSU itself. Just not across the board for the NCAA. Especially since the NCAA as an association was pretty muddled back then.

As opposed to the smooth-running machine we know today.

I meant as a cohesive organization. The NCAA was split a few times before it became the prevailing organization.

quote:

Assists are a relatively new statistic in college basketball, having only become an official statistic beginning with the 1983–84 season.[3] According to the 2009–10 NCAA Division I men's basketball media guide, however, there were two seasons in the early 1950s in which assists were recorded: 1950–51 and 1951–52.[3]

If Morant's AAU teammates were playing exclusively 1 on 1 and barely moving without the ball, I could see where his skills would go overlooked.

He might have seemed like yet another lanky 6'3" kid.

This story about how Murray State found Morant is pretty revealing:

quote:

Earlier that day, dozens of kids were measured and went through drills. The best testers were kept in the main gym. A small cluster of the rest, Morant among them, were directed to the back gym, mostly to play three-on-three.

So Kane is in the building, watching Brown, but he's really hungry. So he asks an event organizer where he can get some concession-stand food. Kane wanders into the back gym, looking for grub.

Instead, he finds the next NBA player to come out of Murray State. Kane is surprised to see this lanky kid dominating in three-on-three. His name isn't even available in the recruiting packet handed out to coaches at the event.

"I've always thought James is one of the top talent evaluators in college basketball," McMahon said. "He called me and said, 'This kid's going to be a pro.'" Kane was smitten and dumbfounded: Why is this kid not playing in the main gym, and who the hell is he? Tee Morant was there that day, GoPro in hand, capturing his son on video in hopes of eventually catching the eye of a flourishing program. Kane connected, and within essentially a week's time, McMahon offered Morant a scholarship in the parking lot after a tournament in Greensboro.
