ok, my mistake. I read somewhere that they were using restored audio and I guess I took that to mean it was all restored audio.

The voice over narration by former soldiers is the restored audio.

Just from a technical standpoint, there is very little sound film from the second world war, much less the first. There was no audio "recorded" so nothing to "restore" - as it is, we're lucky to have any of it considering the technical challenges of filming at that time and on those battlefields.
