quote:Being a somewhat fluid term back in 1950 doesn't lessen its meaning at all in today's world where specific tournaments mean more than others to everyone involved. There have always been tiers with way more complexity beyond Majors vs. others. However, the Majors have been the same 4 since the 60s.
So much meaning they have changed about 6-7 times and potentially is about to change again

I said this is why people like the term

The Players can never be a major because the tournament is set up by the players playing in the tournament so it will never be an actual test of Major Championship level golf. Whether it be the green jackets at Augusta, USGA, R&A or the PGA of America, the other four majors have governing bodies that generally (with some obvious unfortunate concessions) try their best to set up the course to ensure the greatest possibility of the best golfer winning the tournament, separate from any outside influence.
Look at the condition of the course for the week- completely over-seeded, softened to ensure the least amount of headache for the competitors. This week will not be a Major Championship test, and as long as the PGA Tour is in charge it will never be.
