It is not an excuse or a defense, but it is the truth.
What is inexcusable is F. King and Alleva suspending Wade now. This whole situation made news in 2017 and Wade has been linked to it since at least SEC media day last fall. Alleva backed Wade then and said that it would cooperate with any NCAA. Alleva and LSU's compliance department obviously did not investigate the matter very much because LSU's involvement goes back to TIm Quarterman in 2016. The entire administration at LSU got caught with their pants down and their heads up their asses. Now they are throwing Wade under the bus to try and save themselves. Which is not going to work because if it is true then LSU is screwed, suspending the coach, or a self-imposed postseason ban is not going to change that.

No, his contract would almost certainly contain language where he is agreeing that the duties of his position will be performed in accordance with all applicable NCAA rules and regulations. It is pretty standard in employment contracts for a college coach. Even if they hire him knowing full well how things are going to be done, it is with the understanding of "don't get caught, if you do we will stand behind you, so far behind you no one will know we are there."
