We had a payroll clerk that accidentally entered a $1.00 raise as $10.00 raise. When I caught the error months later and brought it the employees attention he quit. Legal Dept said we had to eat the overpayment.

I mean, there should be a process in place to check payroll registers for any differences. Goes without saying that someone should be reviewing those registers before payments go out. Even though the payroll clerk messed up, it's still up to management to identify those errors timely.
